Older communities with distinctive character

Close to downtown with that neighborhood feeling. Older, well built homes are characteristic of Tacoma's neighborhoods. Although city neighborhoods are architecturally similar and within ten minutes of downtown, each has distinct attributes, business districts, neighborhood parks and community centers.

East Side

Just east of downtown, you'll find affordable living in traditional neighborhoods with small homes, apartments and some duplexes.

Historic Old Town

One finds small older homes, some with partial views of Commencement Bay, and larger homes with sweeping views of Puget Sound.

North End

The majority of these homes, located northwest of downtown and Old Town, were built in the mid-1940's after WWII. Here you'll see craftsman style bungalows and contemporary ranch homes in the same block.

North Slope

An early residential neighborhood located just west of Tacoma on the hills above downtown, this area has modest housing, with many apartment complexes and duplexes.

Ruston

The town of Ruston is located at the northwestern edge of Tacoma and clusters around the old industrial section of town. Mostly older homes and low slung ranch style houses. Some newer apartment complexes are also available.

South End

Older, single family homes located south of downtown in the South End. Newer homes, apartments and condominiums are also scattered throughout the neighborhood.
